Unharvested Futures: Voices of The Field is a site-specific installation situated within an abandoned paddy field in Pulau Tuba, Langkawi. Developed through field research, the work confronts a critical absence—the disappearance of both material culture and embodied knowledge once rooted in the land.
In response, the field is not restored but reconfigured as a space of speculative cultivation. Grid of small canvases, each mounted on simple wooden stakes is installed directly into the ground loosely echoing the spatial logic of rice planting. These canvases carry drawings produced by local children, imagining possible futures of the paddy field—its return, mutation or reinvention. Their gestures are intuitive and unrestrained, forming a field of projections that have yet to be realized. This arrangement is not entirely fixed, the spacing and deliberately left gaps reflect the disruption of the cultivation system that once existed.
Among these are quieter interventions derived from former farmers presented as fragments of memory—brief markings, spatial traces and notations of past labour. These elements do not reconstruct what has been lost but instead register its absence marking the limits of recall and transmission.
The installation maintains a structured order while allowing for rupture. The grid remains legible, yet its continuity is unsettled by voids shifts in density and moments of suspension. Visitors move through the work rather than observe it from a distance encountering a landscape that oscillates between what is remembered and what is imagined.
An existing structure nearby is reactivated as Nadi Padi, a space for drawing workshops and shared narratives. Functioning as a living repository rather than a static archive, it gathers voices that cannot be harvested yet continue to circulate within the field.
